Winter Twilight

My outdoor explorations inspire me to paint the beauty of the winter season, especially the Okanagan mountain slopes that I return to in late November near a familiar snowshoe trail. The sunlit snow-laden trees always attract me at this time of year. After some initial sketches, I like to build up the surface of the canvas with a lot of glazing and scumbling in the foreground. The contrast of the shadows and the warm sunlit trees are highlighted where the sky meets the horizon, which is established with the warm nickel azo gold underpainting. My artwork is often a celebration of nature.
